How to get more views on TikTok: the short answer
There is no guaranteed way to go viral on TikTok, but you can give every video a better chance. Make videos the right viewers watch to the end, save and share, and make it obvious what each one is about. TikTok decides who sees a video mostly from how people interact with it. By its own account, your follower count is not a direct factor, so a small account can reach a large audience with the right video.
To see what that looks like in practice, we studied 117 breakout videos. On October 3, 2026 we ran 12 TikTok keyword searches across common niches, from meal prep to personal finance, and collected about 30 of the most-liked US videos from the previous six months for each: 352 videos in total. We ranked them by views divided by followers and kept the top third. 55 of the 117 breakouts came from accounts with fewer than 10,000 followers, and 13 from accounts with fewer than 1,000.
How TikTok decides who sees your video
TikTok’s For You feed recommends videos from three kinds of signals. The first is how viewers interact: the videos they like, share and comment on, the accounts they follow and what they create. The second is information about the video itself, such as its caption, sounds and hashtags. Device and account settings, like language and country, count for less.
Some interactions count for more than others. TikTok’s example is that a viewer finishing a longer video from start to end is a stronger signal than the viewer and creator being in the same country. TikTok also says neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor, although a bigger following still brings views from the people who already follow you.
Two practical rules follow. Views come from people choosing to keep watching, so the opening and the payoff matter more than how often you post. And TikTok says it doesn’t recommend duplicated content or spam, so re-uploading the same clip, or someone else’s, is not a shortcut.
Small accounts were part of the breakout story.
- 352videos collected across 12 niche searches
- 117breakouts in the top third by views ÷ followers
- 55of those breakouts had fewer than 10K followers
Win the first few seconds
Viewers decide almost at once whether to stay. These breakouts gave them a reason in the first line or the first shot.
- Start with a moment your viewer recognizes
Put viewers inside a situation they know before you teach anything. A cleaning video opened by asking viewers to stand in their kitchen doorway and look at the dishes from last night and the pan still on the stove. The rest of the 16-minute video walked through how to clean the whole house, and it still reached seven times its creator’s following.
Example: @cleaningsecrets_us, 16.4K views on 2.3K followers (7.1× their audience) ↗ - Put a real number in the first sentence
"Take your monthly income and multiply it by 0.55" gives every viewer a personal answer straight away. A price, a time or a count does the same job: it is specific, and viewers can check it against their own life. In personal finance, 6 of the 10 breakouts we found opened with this kind of formula.
Example: @jordfinance, 2.8M views on 32.9K followers (84.1× their audience) ↗ - If the idea is quick, keep the video quick
A 7-second video on how much a tropical vacation costs in different destinations reached 174 times its creator’s following. Short works when the whole point lands at once. It isn’t a rule, though: only 17 of the 117 breakouts were under 15 seconds.
Example: @bossesandballerstravels, 524.2K views on 3K followers (174.1× their audience) ↗
Give people a reason to stay and save
Watching to the end, saving and sharing are deliberate choices, and TikTok counts finishing a longer video as a strong signal. Across the 117 breakouts, the median video got one save for every 57 views, one share for every 205 and about one comment for every 2,000. Saves outnumbered shares in 107 of the 117.
- Make the full length worth watching
Don’t cut a video shorter than the idea needs. The median breakout ran about 40 seconds, and 47 of the 117 ran longer than a minute. A four-and-a-half-minute video of one creator’s favorite cleaning tips passed a million views, and 6% of viewers saved it. Length works when every part delivers something.
Example: @julialeblancc, 1.1M views on 113.9K followers (9.3× their audience) ↗ - Make something worth coming back to
Steps, routines, formulas and checklists get saved because viewers plan to use them later. A video built around one study method, introduced as the creator’s best study tip, was saved by 7% of the people who watched it: four times the median breakout.
Example: @phoebespublicdiary, 286.6K views on 5.8K followers (49.3× their audience) ↗ - Let viewers do it with you
Follow-along videos turn watching into doing. A 36-second at-home abs circuit from an account with 14.7K followers reached 5.9 million views, and 5.8% of viewers saved it. Show each move clearly enough that nobody needs the sound on.
Example: @sarasparkss, 5.9M views on 14.7K followers (402.8× their audience) ↗
Make it useful beyond the first watch.
- 01StayEvery step moves toward the promised result.
- 02SaveA recipe, routine or checklist to use later.
- 03ShareSomething a specific friend would want.
Make each video easy to place and easy to follow up
TikTok reads captions, sounds and hashtags to understand a video. Being clear about the topic gives it more to work with, and a format that works once is worth repeating.
- Say what the video is about, in words
Spell out the topic in the caption, on screen and out loud. A night skincare routine listed every step in its caption, from the double cleanse onward, so it was clear exactly what the video covered. Plain words beat clever ones when you want the right people to find a video.
Example: @carolena.selva, 578.4K views on 14.2K followers (40.6× their audience) ↗ - Turn a breakout into a series
When a video works, make the next part. A personal finance creator’s "Part 2", with four more money numbers to know, became a breakout of its own. Another finance creator had two breakouts in our sample built on the same formula opening. A series gives viewers a reason to look for the next one.
Example: @gray.area.finance, 1.1M views on 18.1K followers (58.1× their audience) ↗ - Don’t wait until you have followers
A 25-second home workout routine from an account with about 3,000 followers reached 356K views. Of the 55 breakouts from accounts under 10,000 followers, 36 passed 100,000 views. Make each video for the viewer you want, not the audience you have so far.
Example: @yung16_tee, 356.2K views on 3K followers (117.3× their audience) ↗
Why is my TikTok not getting views?
If a video gets almost no views, check the basics first. Make sure your account isn’t private and that the video can be watched by everyone, not only followers or friends. Then open the video in your TikTok analytics: TikTok says analytics show whether a video was made ineligible for recommendation.
Low views don’t necessarily mean you broke a rule. According to TikTok’s eligibility standards, a video left out of the For You feed can still be found through search or on your profile. TikTok keeps some content that isn’t suitable for a broad audience out of the For You feed, and doesn’t recommend duplicated content or spam.
If none of that applies, the video probably didn’t give enough people a reason to keep watching. Check where viewers dropped off in your analytics, then change one thing in the next video, usually the opening.
A weekly routine for more views
More views come from a steady run of clear, useful videos, not one lucky post. A simple week: search your niche and note what is breaking out, pick three questions your audience keeps asking, film one video for each using a lesson above, and post them.
Review each video after seven days. Keep the format that held attention, change the opening on the one that didn’t, and make a part two of the best one.

What this data can and cannot tell you
These lessons describe what the breakouts had in common. We didn’t compare them with the other 235 videos in the same searches, so they show what worked, not proof that it caused the reach. Timing, sounds, trends and luck all play a part.
The searches covered 12 niches and about 30 US videos each. View and follower counts were recorded on October 3, 2026 and will change. The figures above cover all 117 breakouts; for the examples we chose English-language videos that didn’t read as sponsored.
